Lost Souls
Lost Souls is a series of vignettes depicting people who have hit rock bottom and how they either pull themselves out of the situation, find a resolution or have it completely overcome them.
Dann Emmons, the director, was looking for a piece of music that would play throughout the film - helping to tell the story of our characters whilst building in intensity and emotion. As the film is absent of dialogue, the music needed to push the narrative of these characters who are experiencing the lows of grief, pain, loss and heartbreak.
We discussed splitting the music into two sections to reflect the change in our characters, with the second half increasing in intensity quickly and then continue to crescendo until the final scene. It is in the second half where the score really comes to life, with marching foot stomps and snares, mammoth toms, ambient post-rock guitars and vocals as well as driving strings and piano. I called upon Rob Di Marzo, my old band mate in Sydney to track the drums, recording them separately to give us more options in the mix. Dom Howard then mixed and mastered the track, adding his magic to the final version.
