The first thing that got me really excited about scoring Nzu was the opportunity to research Nigerian music, in particular Igbo music. I love learning about new rhythms, instrumentation and harmonic languages used in music from other cultures and then adapting them into my own style. There is lots of percussive elements across this score, usually helping to build tension or to introduce us to the world our characters live in.
One of the key themes in Nzu is how the actions of our past ancestors impacts the present. I developed a motif, which I called the memory theme, by using a short cello and piano theme that sounded like a distant call.
The director, Conscian, wanted to make sure the music never suggested that of a horror, instead wanting the dialogue and acting to create an uneasiness amongst our characters. It was really interesting to approach the score in this way, and we ended up really stripping it back to something simple and bare.
