This Is A Free Country
A collaboration with my mum Pamela Leung, an Australian/Hong Kong multi-disciplinary visual artist, This Is A Free Country challenges notions of freedom through a performative video piece.
It juxtaposes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in English with physical movements symbolising the pursuit of freedom. It includes a poignant scene where an individual writes the Declaration in Chinese, and is then depicted in jail, illustrating the disparity between declared freedoms and the realities faced by those with hyphenated identities. This highlights the struggle for belonging experienced by individuals navigating between cultural and national identities.
